About Chris Cander
I am a freelance writer specializing in the areas of health, fitness, and nutrition. I have been a contributing writer to Oxygen since 2001, and contributing editor to Clean Eating since the debut issue in 2007. My stories have appeared in many other national publications including Texas Monthly, Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers, LowCarb Living, Energy for Women, and the Houston Chronicle.
Favorite Topics
After competing for years in fitness and bodybuilding, fitness writing has become a natural niche. Many of my story ideas come from conversations I overhear at the gym, or from questions I'm asked by fitness enthusiasts seeking advice or instruction. However, as I develop, so does my writing, and so I enjoy exploring subjects beyond just health and fitness. Especially since the births of my children and my husband's life-saving kidney transplant, I've discovered a plethora of new topics to tackle, such as organ health and transplantation, finding inspiration, parenting, creating a balanced life and more.
Background
I earned my BA in French with a minor in Political Science from the Honors College at the University of Houston. Prior to writing full-time, I was a marketing and communications professional with many years of demonstrated success in the high-technology industry. I am a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and MENSA.
Looking Forward
When I'm not writing articles, I work on fiction, poetry, and children's stories. Ever since entering a writing contest in fifth grade, I've suffered from an insatiable urge to write. Hardly a day goes by that my fingertips don't dance across a keyboard, or struggle longhand across a piece of paper. In my office are boxes filled with scraps of paper containing bits of imagined conversation, interesting character names, story ideas, and even single, delicious words. Sometimes, they end up in stories or articles. Most often, they languish in piles, but I can't resist their collection and inditement. Someday, I think. Someday.
